DC-DC Chargers

DC-to-DC battery chargers that safely charge your house bank from an alternator while driving. Critical for RV, van, and boat builds.

A DC-to-DC charger sits between your vehicle's starter battery and your house battery bank, converting alternator voltage into a controlled multi-stage charge profile that's safe for lithium batteries. Without one, a modern smart alternator can't properly charge LiFePO4 house batteries — the voltage profile is wrong and you'll either undercharge the bank or damage it. DC-DC chargers solve this with a dedicated charge stage (bulk, absorption, float) tuned for whatever battery chemistry you've got. If you have a dual-battery system and drive regularly, this is the single most important component you can add.

DC-DC Chargers Buyer's Guide

How much amperage?

Match the charger amperage to your alternator output and your battery bank size. A 20A charger is fine for maintaining a 100Ah bank on short drives. 40A is the sweet spot for most RV and van conversions — meaningful charging in 2-3 hours of driving without overloading the alternator. 60A requires verification that your alternator can handle the load (typically 150A+ alternator).

Solar input (MPPT) built-in?

Some DC-DC chargers (like the Renogy DCC50S and LiTime 40A) include a built-in MPPT solar controller so the house bank charges from both the alternator while driving and solar while parked. This saves you from buying a separate charge controller and simplifies the wiring. Worth it if you're running solar anyway.

Victron vs Renogy vs budget brands

Victron Orion-XS and Orion-Tr Smart are the premium pick — bulletproof build quality, Bluetooth monitoring via VictronConnect, and the best long-term reliability. Renogy and LiTime deliver 90% of the functionality at roughly half the price with solid warranty coverage. Avoid unbranded Amazon DC-DC chargers for safety-critical builds.
