Detailed Review
Overview
The Victron SmartShunt IP65 is a weatherized evolution of Victron’s acclaimed SmartShunt line. Where the standard SmartShunt is designed for enclosed battery compartments, the IP65-rated version adds a sealed enclosure that resists water jets and dust ingress — making it suitable for outdoor battery boxes, open engine bays, sailboat bilges, and other environments where moisture is a real concern. It retains all the accuracy and Bluetooth functionality that makes the SmartShunt family the benchmark for off-grid battery monitoring.
How It Works
The IP65 SmartShunt uses the same coulomb-counting principle as its standard sibling: a precision shunt bar in the negative cable measures all current flowing to and from the battery bank. The integrated electronics module samples the millivolt drop at high frequency and integrates it over time to maintain an accurate state of charge. Temperature compensation adjusts the calculation for ambient conditions. Bluetooth Low Energy broadcasts live data to the VictronConnect app on any nearby iOS or Android device.
Key Features
The IP65 enclosure is the defining upgrade — the electronics module is hermetically sealed and rated to withstand sustained water spray from any direction. This opens installation locations that would destroy an unprotected monitor: under the hood of a vehicle, on the back of a solar combiner box, or in a deck-mounted battery bank on a powerboat. The 300A continuous rating covers most systems below 15kWh, and the 6.5-70V range spans 12V through 48V configurations.
VictronConnect provides the same rich monitoring experience as the standard SmartShunt: real-time SOC, voltage, current, power, time-to-go, and multi-day history graphs. Alarm thresholds for low SOC and voltage notify you via push notification. Integration with the Victron ecosystem — MPPT controllers, Cerbo GX, and inverter-chargers — is seamless via the Venus OS platform.
Who It’s For
The Victron SmartShunt IP65 is ideal for any installation where the monitor will be exposed to the elements. Marine users will appreciate the bilge-ready sealing. Off-grid builders mounting equipment in outdoor enclosures get the same peace of mind. It is slightly less expensive than the 500A version while still covering the majority of residential-scale battery systems. If your install is safely indoors, the standard SmartShunt or the 500A version is an equally capable choice.
